I’ve been hooked on screenwriting for a lot of years now… obviously an addiction (which would be the only reason to keep writing something never meant to be read if you’re not getting rich). I’ve been in a workshop with Blake Snyder (before he died), have taken Hal’s Screenwriting U course (valuable to be sure), I’ve even produced a movie based on a script that won a Silver at the Page International Awards. So I could think by now I know what I’m doing, right? I’m relieved I’m not that smug, or I would not have taken Nick Abdo’s on line offer to critique a script. I sent him one that has been optioned three times! Soon to be a 4th. This is one of the smarter things I’ve done in a long time. Because Nick opened my eyes wide. He sent back a detailed, page by page analysis of nearly every friggin’ word, and followed that up with a 45 minute phone call that went by in a flash. As a result, I have a much much MUCH better script.
Do I recommend any serious writer to contact Nick? Is the Pope Catholic? Just do it. If you don’t come away with better ideas, a better story, it’s because your ego’s in the way. Nick is very positive, takes your writing seriously and is dead on. Well, he has a bit of experience...
"Nick has insight for structure. As he gazes inside, he can quickly pinpoint roads that need repair, bridges that are out, etc. He has a knack for story as well. If he says it doesn't work, it probably doesn't. But he's a fixer too. Nick has a great sense of both story and character, he knows what rings true. And he supplements with criticism that's direct yet inspiring, and with creative that works. His comments are purposeful and detailed. I took to heart every note he had and incorporated it into my work. The result was better than I ever imagined. "
